What makes the Zi Ni - Arc Edge teapot's clay special compared to other Zi Ni varieties?
The Zi Ni used in this Arc Edge teapot is a finely aged, high-iron ore from the Huanglong Mountain mines. Its natural granular texture and high density provide excellent heat retention, which helps to soften the astringency in dark teas like ripe Pu'er and aged sheng. Unlike standard Zi Ni, this batch has a slightly higher sand content, giving the surface a subtle, sparkly luster after seasoning.
Why is the 'Arc Edge' design beneficial for tea brewing?
The Arc Edge design features a gently curved, sharpened rim on the lid and spout that minimizes dripping and enhances pour control. The smooth, sweeping arc of the handle and body creates a balanced weight distribution, allowing for a stable, fatigue-free pour. Internally, the spout is designed with a subtle angle that promotes laminar flow, ensuring a clean, precise stream without splashing.
Will the Zi Ni - Arc Edge teapot change color or develop a patina over time?
Yes, absolutely. With regular use, high-quality Zi Ni like this Arc Edge model will slowly darken and develop a rich, oily patina. The iron particles in the clay oxidize upon contact with hot water and tea oils, shifting from a matte, purplish-brown to a deep, almost obsidian-like sheen. You’ll notice the most change on the lid and around the spout where steam and tea residue concentrate.
Is this teapot suitable for multiple tea types, or should it be dedicated to one?
While Zi Ni is versatile, we recommend dedicating this Arc Edge teapot to a single category—ideally aged raw or ripe Pu'er, or a dark roasted oolong. Zi Ni's porous structure absorbs tea oils and fragrances over many brews, and the Arc Edge's tight-fitting lid is designed to lock in aroma. Switching tea types could muddy the flavor profile. For lighter teas like green or white, a non-porous clay might be better.
How should I season a brand-new Zi Ni - Arc Edge teapot before first use?
To season it, first rinse the teapot with warm water to remove any dust. Then, fill it with boiling water and let it sit for 5 minutes to open the pores. Empty, and place the teapot in a pot of clean water with a handful of the tea leaves you plan to brew. Simmer gently (not boil) for 15 minutes, then let it cool naturally overnight. Rinse once more with hot water, and it's ready. Avoid soap—it will be absorbed and ruin the seasoning.
Does the Arc Edge design affect the teapot's durability or cleaning process?
The angular lid and spout edges are actually hand-finished to be slightly thicker than they appear, which prevents chipping during daily use. For cleaning, the sharp corner inside the lid seat is easy to reach with a soft brush, and the smooth interior surface resists tea scale buildup. Just rinse with hot water after each use and air dry with the lid off to avoid any mold in the crevices.
