Does the Jade Dew's compact body and narrow spout affect brewing with larger-leaf teas like oolong or puerh?
Yes, the Jade Dew's design is optimized for delicate, high-aroma teas such as Dancong oolong or young raw puerh. Its narrow spout provides precise pour control to capture volatile fragrance, while the compact internal volume (typically 100-130ml) concentrates flavors for a powerful liquor. For larger-leaf teas, we recommend breaking the leaves slightly to avoid clogging the spout.
How does the specific Zi Ni (Purple Clay) used in the Jade Dew season with storage over time?
The Zi Ni for this Jade Dew is a fine-grained, high-iron content 'Huang Long Shan' ore with a tight particle structure. Unlike looser clays, it seasons gradually and evenly. You‘ll notice it develops a subtle, dark patina focusing on smoothing the mouthfeel of the tea, rather than drastically altering the aroma. It’s ideal for drinkers who want seasoning without muddying a tea’s floral or fruity top notes.
Why is the Jade Dew shaped with a very low, squat profile, and does this affect heat retention?
The low, broad ‘Dun’ (squat) shape is a classic ‘Jade Dew’ silhouette (玉露式). It maximizes the clay’s contact with the tea liquor, which improves heat transfer from the walls. Combined with Zi Ni’s natural density, this design actually holds heat longer than a taller pot of the same volume, ensuring stable extraction for delicate greenish oolongs or aged white teas that require consistent low-to-mid temperature steeps.
Can I use this Jade Dew pot for high-temperature boiling on a stove or induction cooktop?
No. Although Zi Ni is fired at high temperatures (approx. 1180°C), the Jade Dew is a Yixing handcrafted teapot designed for gongfu brewing at 95-100°C via water pouring only. The spout, handle, and lid integrate with thin-walled Jin Sha (golden sand) additions that can crack under direct flame or induction heat. Use it only with a kettle or hot water dispenser.
I notice the inner wall isn‘t polished — does the rough interior affect the first few uses?
That inner texture is a feature, not a flaw. It’s left intentionally ‘Shati’ (sandy) to increase the surface area for quick patina formation and to trap fine tea particulate. For the first 3-5 brews, you may sense a slight ‘earthy’ or freshly fired minerality in the tea, which fades once the pores absorb enough tea oils. To speed this, we recommend a dedicated seasoning session with a low-grade of the same tea you plan to brew.
